Our School Curriculum

CURRICULUM INTENT

At Hinchliffe Mill Junior and Infant School our curriculum intention is to prepare our pupils to be responsible, resilience and respectful citizens of our community beyond, with the foundations required for them to be ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges that their lives and the world will offer in the future.

We have designed our curriculum to encompass having a knowledge and understanding of the community we live in and the wider world beyond that. This is in preparation for them being a global citizen.  Our engaging and exciting curriculum stimulates our children into asking searching questions, shapes their learning and enables them to develop into independent thinkers and learners.

Our Big Ideas all link to Belonging

which are interwoven with our school Values into the Curriculum at Hinchliffe Mill Junior and Infant School

We belong to a COMMUNITYWe are all part of Hinchliffe mill school which is part of a wider community.

Our school values help us make the right decisions when we interact in our everyday life with friends, family, school staff and other people that we meet in our community

There are special and unique things about our community – our landscape, our geography, our history.

It is important that we play a part in our community, as community citizens – our voice counts, we care about looking after our community, we want to be involved in decisions locally and nationally – embedding our school values in our community and our interactions within it.

We belong to a human race: we are part of a DIVERSE global community of people.

People live in different communities, with diverse cultures, histories and landscapes but we have things in common. People should be treated equally because of this commonality. Diversity is to be celebrated and respected, we are interested in how other communities are unique and special and how we can learn from them to enrich our lives.

If we want people to value and respect our community then we must respect other people’s communities. We strive to understand differences – we know that our view of the world is particular and our community is particular, we look at different people and places with wonder and want to learn about other people’s stories and journeys.

We want to be responsible citizens of our global community, we use our school values to support our interactions with all people. We care about all the people of earth, we want to help people in other parts of the world who want our help, we want to be involved in global decisions.

We belong to the planet: we are part of the earth and need to help it's SUSTAINIBLITY

We are not born on the earth, we are born from the earth. We need to care for our planet and treat it with respect because we belong to it and we are part of it and have a duty to care for and sustain it for future generations.

We show compassion towards animals, plants and their habitats and embed our school values in our interactions with other living things. We have to share the planet and make sure our decisions help other living things.

We want to create a culture of sustainability for our young people, enabling them to recognise how we can support this in our daily life to help the planet.

IMPELMENTATION

We meet our statutory obligations using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework and the National Curriculum and enhance this through our wider curriculum provision.

We ensure effective progression in our subjects through the use of Development Matters, PSHE Association guidelines and the Jigsaw scheme for PSHE and the Kirklees, Calderdale and Leeds agreed syllabus for RE. For our core subjects we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, Monster Phonics scheme, Resilient Reader and Talk4Writing approaches..

We review, evaluate and improve our subject delivery through coaching and mentoring, by consulting pupils and analysing outcomes.

Through monitoring, subject leaders identify areas for improvement, resources required, CPD needs and best practice through the use of evidence based strategies.

IMPACT

Our pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to excel, and become creative and curious citizens. Outcomes for pupils are high which ensures that our pupils have the best possible chance of achieving economic well-being. Our strong links with partner schools and well embedded transition procedures mean that pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their secondary education.
